Research Essay (70 pts)
Each year the program provides an essay topic that challenges students to think like engineers and address a social situation with a futurist technical solution. The team writes an Essay (maximum 1000 words) on the assigned engineering related topic. This year's topic is:

“Choose one alternative energy source and design a way to generate electric power for their city that does not deplete natural resources and has limited impact on the environment.”

Your engineering team will define electrical power and need for alternative sources, brainstorm potential solutions, select and design a solution, evaluate the solution and summarize how your city will generate electrical power using an alternative source.

Tutorials and educational opportunities for teachers, mentors and students are made available throughout the fall for assistance with the essay requirements and to learn more about electric power generation and alternative energy sources.  Students will cite a minimum of 3 sources of information on their reference page. Click here for the full Essay Question. See 2012 Rules for a list of all requirements. The Essay submittal date is 12/16/2011.
