The Competition Requirements
*All Scoring Rubrics are NEW for the 2009-2010 Program.

I. Design the City (100 pts)
• Students will use SimCity 4 Deluxe™ software to develop a logical design of a city for the future.
• Cities must be progressed to at least 150 years.
• Population requirement for the designed city is 50,000 or greater.
• There are no restrictions on the environment, location or celestial body where the city exists.
• A pre-designed (medium or large) region must be used to create you city in. Regions must be selected here.
• Cheat codes are not allowed.
• SimCity Manual, Tutorial Presentation and Tutorial Video are on the national site.

II. Build the City (120 pts)
• The team will build a 3-D Model of a section of their city. The section is a creative representation of the computer design
and is not required to look exactly like the computer design.
• The model may be no larger than 25” (W) x 50” (L) x 20” (H) and weigh no more than 75 pounds. This includes open
width of any doors on the model, rotating or flipping of the model, etc.
• Model must contain at least one moving part such as transportation, power generation or communications.
Power sources must be self-contained.
• The model must be built to scale as defined by the team.
• Students will choose the materials for building the model. Material costs for the entire project may not exceed $100
(cash and in-kind). Students are encouraged to use recycled items, this includes “dumpster diving” recyclables as
well as household recyclables such as plastic, glass and tin.
• No perishable items or live animals may be used in the model.
• Include a 4x6 inch Model Identification Index Card to be displayed next to the model including: a) the name of the
Future City, b) scale of the model, c) school name and d) names of the three presenting students, the teacher
coach and the engineer mentor.

III. Essay & Narrative (90 pts)
• The team will write a 700-1000 word Essay on an assigned engineering related topic. This year’s topic is “Providing an
affordable green living space for people who have lost their home due to a disaster or financial emergency.”
• At least 3 sources of information must be cited on the essay reference page (Wikipedia may not be used as a reference).
• The team will also write a 300-500 word City Narrative describing the city’s key features and design attributes
including the city’s infrastructure and its public services.
• Include the Future City NAME only on each page of both the Narrative and the Essay. The City Name must match the
name submitted on all other requirements.
• Place the word count for each document at the end. Word count does not include titles or references.

IV. Communicate Results (90 pts)
• The team will prepare a verbal presentation of their city (5-7 minutes presentation, 5 minutes question/answer period).
Presentations should be well polished.
• Students may design a presentation poster(s) as a demonstration aid. Size limitations shall not exceed a single display
of 60” (W) x 36” (H) or two (2) displays not exceeding 30” (W) x 36” (H). The size does not include the easel, which will be provided.
• Other Demonstration Aids such as pointers, brochures, small mock-ups, etc used to assist with the presentation
must collectively fit within a 6” x 6” x 12” volume (shoe box).
• Laptops, DVD/video players, audio equipment, etc. may not be used for the presentation.
