 The Competition Requirements
*The Future City Competition program is open to 6th, 7th and 8th graders.  New -  6th graders may now participate as presenters.

I. Design the City (100 pts)
• Students will use SimCity™ 4 Deluxe software to develop a logical design of a city for the future.
• Cities must be progressed to at least 150 years.
• Population requirement for the designed city is 50,000 or greater.
• There are no restrictions on the environment, location or celestial body where the city exists.
Teams must use the pre-designed medium region to create their city in. The city is available on the National Future City Web Site: Starter City.
• Cheat codes are not allowed.
• SimCity Manual, Tutorial Presentation and Tutorial Video are on
the national site.

II. Build the City (120 pts)
• The team will build a 3-D Model of a section of their city. The section is a creative representation of the computer design and is not required to look exactly like the computer design.
• The model may be no larger than 25" (W) x 50" (L) x 20" (H). This includes open width of any doors on the model, rotating or flipping of the model, etc. There is no National weight limit this year, however we recommend a model weight < 75lbs.
• Model must contain at least one moving part such as transportation, power generation or communications.
Power sources must be self-contained.
• The model must be built to scale as defined by the team.
• Students will choose the materials for building the model. Material costs for the entire project may not exceed $100 (cash and in-kind). Students are encouraged to use recycled items, this includes "dumpster diving" recyclables as well as household recyclables such as plastic, glass and tin.
• No perishable items or live animals may be used in the model.
• Include a 4x6 inch Model Identification Index Card to be displayed next to the model including: a) the name of the Future City, b) scale of the model, c) school name and d) names of the three presenting students, the teacher coach and the engineer mentor.

III. Essay (70 pts) & Narrative (20 pts)
• The team will write an Essay (max. 1000 words) on an assigned engineering related topic. This year's topic is

“Choose one alternative energy source and design a way to generate electric power for their city that does not deplete natural resources and has limited impact on the environment.”

• At least 3 sources of information must be cited on the essay reference page (Wikipedia may not be used as a reference).
• The team will also write a City Narrative (max. 500 words) describing the city's key features and design attributes including the city's infrastructure and its public services.
• Include the Future City NAME and SCHOOL NAME on each page of both the Narrative and the Essay. The City Name must match the name submitted on all other requirements.
• Place the word count for each document at the end. Word count does not include titles and reference list, but does include captions of graphics and illustrations.  A maximum of 4 graphics and illustrations are allowed in the essay.

IV. Communicate Results (90 pts)
• The team will prepare a verbal presentation of their city (max 7 minute presentation, 5 minutes question/answer period). Presentations should be well polished.
• Students may design a presentation poster(s) as a demonstration aid. Size limitations shall not exceed a single display of 60" (W) x 36" (H) or two (2) displays not exceeding 30" (W) x 36" (H). The size does not include the easel, which will be provided.
• Other Demonstration Aids such as pointers, brochures, small mock-ups, etc used to assist with the presentation must collectively fit within a 6" x 6" x 12" volume (shoe box).  If the team chooses to provide handouts, they must be limited to one 8.5"x11" sheet of paper.  All demonstration aids including handouts and sotumes must be included on the Expense Form as part of the $100 maximum.
• Laptops, DVD/video players, audio equipment, etc. may not be used for the presentation.
